What Can Cause A Burn?
Any form of dry heat like fire, wet heat like steam or hot liquids, heated objects, radiation, chemicals or electricity can all cause burns. The most common kind of burns are thermal burns. Thermal burns occur when hot metals, steam, flames or scalding liquid come into contact with the skin.
Types Of Burn
There are three types of burns, and while some are considered milder than others, they can all leave lasting effects.
First-Degree Burns – First-degree burns are generally considered to be mild in comparison to other burns. The burns can still be extremely painful, and dependant on the location can still leave a scar. First-degree burns result in sudden pain and reddening of the outer layer of the skin; this layer is known as the epidermis.
Second-Degree Burns – Second-degree burns are often referred to as partial-thickness burns. These burns affect both the epidermis and the dermis, which is the lower layer of the skin. Second-degree burns also cause pain, redness, but you will also experience swelling and blistering.
Third-Degree Burns – Third-degree burns are known as full-thickness burns. This is due to the depth of the burn, surpassing the dermis and affecting the deeper tissues. Third-degree burns often result in charred skin that turns black, and the area can also be very numb.
